Regenerative Endodontic Therapy

In recent years, the field of endodontics has joined forces with other medical fields in the exploration of regenerative treatment options based on stem cell research. At Ayik + Berto Endodontics, formerly known as The Endodontics Group, Inc., our endodontics team in Park Cities prioritizes staying current on the recent advancements in our field and staying focused on related case studies. What we have discovered so far is that regenerative endodontic therapy can be successful in the treatment of pulpal necrosis, a condition where the tooth pulp dies.

According to “Endodontics: Colleagues For Excellence”, regenerative endodontic therapy is defined as:

“biologically based procedures designed to replace damaged structures,
including dentin and root structures, as well as cells of the pulp-dentin complex.”

In endodontics cases of pulpal necrosis in immature teeth at Ayik + Berto Endodontics in Park Cities, tissue engineering can promote further development of the root apex (tip) and increase the thickness of the root canal wall. In addition to this, there are 3 crucial elements involved in tissue engineering:

• Growth factors – proteins that signal a rapid increase of cells and bind to cell receptors
• Scaffolds – biodegradable or permanent fixtures created by using natural materials in order to support cells
• Stem cells – undifferentiated cells that are capable of continual division

These elements work in conjunction with one another to regenerate damaged tissue by 1) disinfecting the pulp, 2) releasing growth factors, 3) delivering stem cells to the canal, 4) supporting cells with a scaffold, and 5) sealing the tooth.
